Water Deeply, Not Often

More first-year vegetables are damaged by watering habits than by pests, disease, and weather combined — and usually by watering that is frequent, brief, and shallow.

A light daily sprinkle is worse than useless. It wets the top few centimetres, evaporates, and trains roots to stay near the surface where they are entirely dependent on you. A plant watered deeply and less often sends roots down to where the moisture is stable, and becomes far more resilient to a hot week.

Water thoroughly and less frequently. For an established bed, a good soak two or three times a week in dry weather beats a daily splash, and the standard orientation figure is roughly 25mm of water per week from rain or hose combined.

Check the soil rather than the calendar. Push a finger in to the second knuckle. Damp means wait. Dry at that depth means water. That test is more reliable than any schedule and takes two seconds.

Water the soil, not the leaves, and preferably in the early morning. Wet foliage overnight invites fungal disease; morning watering gives the plant a full day of supply and leaves dry quickly. Evening is second best and much better than nothing.

Mulch. A 5cm layer of compost, straw, grass clippings, or leaf mould on the soil surface reduces evaporation dramatically, suppresses weed germination, keeps soil temperature stable, and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Keep it a little clear of plant stems. In a hot dry summer, mulch is worth more than any amount of extra watering effort.

Containers are the exception to everything above. Pots dry out extraordinarily fast — a container of tomatoes in high summer can need water twice a day — and there is no reservoir beneath them. Check daily, and check again in a heatwave.

Feeding, and Not Overdoing It

If you have added compost generously, most crops need nothing else for much of the season. Excess feeding is a real problem, not a theoretical one: too much nitrogen produces enormous leafy plants that never fruit, which is exactly what happens to overfed tomatoes.

The useful distinctions:

  • Leafy crops (lettuce, chard, spinach, brassicas) use nitrogen and respond to a general feed or good compost.
  • Fruiting crops (tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, cucumbers) want a high-potassium feed once they begin flowering — the standard advice to use tomato feed is not brand loyalty, it is the nutrient ratio.
  • Root crops (carrots, parsnips, beetroot) want no extra nitrogen at all. Feed them and you get magnificent foliage and forked, hairy, disappointing roots. Fresh manure produces the same result.
  • Legumes (beans, peas) fix their own nitrogen and need very little.

Follow the dilution on the label rather than improving on it. Doubling the concentration burns roots.

Weeds, Pests, and Not Panicking

Weeds are only a problem because they compete for water, light, and nutrients. Deal with them small: five minutes of hoeing shallow soil on a dry day kills seedlings before they establish and is trivially easier than pulling established weeds later. Never let annual weeds set seed — the old line about one year’s seeding meaning seven years’ weeding is roughly accurate.

Slugs and snails are the main enemy of small seedlings in damp climates, and they work at night. Reduce hiding places, go out after dark with a torch and remove them by hand for a few nights in a row (unglamorous, remarkably effective), protect vulnerable seedlings with collars, and consider raising plants indoors past the size where slugs can destroy them in one night. If you use any product, read the label properly and check what is permitted and safe around children, pets, and wildlife where you live.

Aphids cluster on soft new growth. A strong jet of water knocks them off, squashing works, and a healthy garden usually develops its own population of ladybirds, hoverflies, and birds that do it for you. Reaching for a spray at the first aphid tends to kill the predators too, which makes the next outbreak worse.

Caterpillars on brassicas are solved with fine netting installed before the butterflies arrive, held clear of the leaves so eggs cannot be laid through it.

A general principle worth internalising: a few holes in a few leaves is not a crisis. A vegetable garden is not a sterile system, and a garden with some pests and their predators is more stable than one where everything has been sprayed. Intervene when a crop is genuinely threatened, not when a leaf is imperfect.

Rotate crops between beds year to year — do not grow the same family in the same soil two years running, since that is how soil-borne disease and specialised pests build up. With one bed, this is impossible; do what you can and rely on compost and general soil health instead.

Support, Space, and Air

Stake and tie tall crops early, before they need it. A tomato plant tied in when it is small is straightforward; one that has fallen over in a storm at full size is a mess of broken stems.

Respect plant spacing on the packet, however absurd it looks when the seedlings are 3cm tall. Overcrowding is a leading cause of fungal disease, because air cannot move between the plants and leaves stay wet. It also produces many small, poor plants where fewer good ones would have yielded more.

Harvesting: Earlier and More Often Than You Think

The habit that separates a productive garden from a decorative one.

Picking makes plants produce more. Beans, courgettes, cucumbers, and salad crops are annuals attempting to set seed; harvesting before they succeed prompts them to try again. Leave a courgette to become a marrow and the plant substantially slows down its production.

Pick young. Almost every vegetable is better slightly under-sized than over-sized. Courgettes at 15cm, beans while the pods are still slim and the seeds not yet visible as bumps, salad as outer leaves rather than whole heads.

Check every day or two in peak season. Courgettes in particular go from perfect to enormous in about forty-eight hours.

Bolting — the plant suddenly sending up a flower stalk — is triggered by heat, day length, or stress, and it usually turns leaves bitter. Lettuce, spinach, and coriander are prone to it. Harvest promptly in hot weather, keep water consistent, and sow small amounts often instead of one large batch.

The End of the Season and the Beginning of the Next

When crops finish, do not leave bare soil over winter. Clear the spent plants (compost the healthy ones, bin any diseased material), and either mulch the bed thickly with compost or sow a green manure. Bare soil loses nutrients to rain, compacts under weather, and grows weeds.

Then do the one thing that most improves next year: write down what happened. What you sowed, when, what did well, what failed, what you had too much of, and what you ran out of. Every experienced gardener’s real advantage is not intuition — it is several years of notes about their own particular patch of ground, which is the only place where general advice becomes specific enough to act on.
